The Story of Sutikshan, Agastya Muni, and Lord Rama
Once, Lord Rama was on his way to meet the revered sage Agastya Muni. Hearing this, Sage Sutikshan requested, “May I accompany you?”
Rama asked, “Why do you want to come with me?”
Sutikshan replied, “Because he is my Guru.”
Rama inquired further, “If he is your Guru, why did you leave him?”
The Devoted Disciple
Sutikshan explained, “I did not leave him, Lord. He asked me to leave because I made a huge mistake. Agastya Muni had a Saligram Shila (sacred stone) which he worshipped with great devotion. When he was going on a trip, I begged him to let me care for the Shila in his absence, and he agreed.
For many weeks, I tended to it with utmost devotion. But one rainy day, I made a grievous mistake. I was craving some Jamuns (Indian Blackberries) from a tree but couldn’t find a stone to knock them down. In a moment of thoughtlessness, I picked up the Shila and threw it at the tree. While I got the Jamun, the Shila fell into the river and disappeared.
The Mistake and Consequence
I searched frantically in the water but could not find it. Fearful of what my Gurudev would say, I placed a Jamun on the altar, hoping to deceive him into believing it was the Shila.
When Agastya Muni returned, he went to perform Abhishek (ritual bathing) of the Shila. As he did so, the Jamun broke. I tried to lie, saying the Shila had become soft and broken due to prolonged Abhishek.
But who can fool an all-knowing Guru? Agastya Muni was angered and asked me to leave the ashram immediately. He said, ‘Do not come back unless you bring the Shila with you.’
The Path to Forgiveness
Now, instead of the Shila, I am bringing you, the Lord Himself, to my Gurudev, and he will surely forgive me.”
Sutikshan went to his Guru, fell at his feet, and begged for forgiveness. He said, “Instead of the Shila, I have brought the Lord Himself.” Agastya Muni, moved by the sight of Lord Rama and Sutikshan’s sincere repentance, forgave him.
The Guru’s Compassion
Agastya Muni had only banished Sutikshan to teach him a lesson and was happy to have him back. Gurus are an ocean of mercy. Jai Sri Ram.
