The Brahmana’s Request
Once, Shri Radha and Shri Krishna, together with the sakhis, were bathing during a festival. As they were dressing themselves after bathing, a poor brahmana approached Shri Krishna in a piteous voice and said: “I have a daughter of marriageable age, but due to lack of money, I cannot offer her to a suitable husband. Therefore, please give me some wealth.”
Krishna’s Gift
Shri Krishna thought, “Shri Radha is My only and entire wealth. Without Her, I possess nothing else of value.” So He told the brahmana, “I want to give you My entire fortune, not just a little money.” He then pointed towards Shri Radha and said, “She is My entire property and wealth. Please accept Her.”
The Brahmana’s Dilemma
The poor brahmana began to beat his head in sadness and said, “O Vrajendra-nandana, I could not even arrange a suitable husband for my one daughter; how will I ever be able to marry off two? This is disastrous for me. What should I do now?”
Krishna’s Solution
Understanding that the brahmana only wanted gold, Shri Krishna put Shri Radha on one side of a scale and Her weight in gold on the other. He then gave all this gold to the brahmana. Shri Radha was pleased with this arrangement, which relieved Her of much trouble. The brahmana, given an abundance of gold, happily returned to his home and completed the marriage of his daughter with a grand celebration.
Moral of the Story
Krishna’s greatest wealth is Srimati Radharani. Attaining Her lotus feet is a rare and supreme fortune, for one who has attained Her has captured Krishna’s heart. This story illustrates that the greatest treasure one can have is the favor and grace of Srimati Radharani, through whom Krishna’s mercy can be fully realized.
