The Question
Once, Narad Muni approached Lord Vishnu, extremely confident that he would receive a favorable answer to his question. He asked, “Oh Lord! I must ask, in all the three worlds, who is your favorite devotee?”
The Task
Lord Vishnu decided to answer, but only after Narad Muni completed a particular task. Narad Muni willingly agreed. Lord Vishnu placed a container of oil filled to the brim on top of Narad Muni’s head. He then instructed him to walk around a mountain without spilling a drop.
The Challenge
Confident in his abilities, Narad Muni proceeded to walk around the mountain with great care. Upon completion, he boasted of his success, ready to hear the favorable answer.
The Revelation
However, Lord Vishnu had a question for Narad. He asked, “Oh Narad Muni, I am proud that you have completed the task, but I have one question for you.”
Narad Muni, still confident, said, “Ask, my Lord.”
Lord Vishnu then asked, “Did you think of me at any point in time while you were carrying the container?”
Narad Muni’s confidence vanished, and he hung his head in shame as he realized that he had not thought of the Lord even once during the task.
The Lesson
Lord Vishnu explained that His true devotee and the one dearest to Him is the one who is ever conscious of His glory and presence in their life. This devotee constantly remembers the Lord, guiding, helping, and protecting them as they perform their duties and work out their karmas.
The Application
Lord Vishnu’s lesson is clear: we must think of the Lord as we live our fast-paced lives. When we do so, our tasks become easier, our jobs less stressful, and our lives holier and more blessed. The growing positivity within us radiates outward, inspiring others and changing our environment and society.
The Three Qualities
To truly integrate this lesson into our lives, we must incorporate three qualities:
- The Sensitivity of a Poet: In our dealings and relationships with other human beings and the natural world, we should be gentle and considerate.
- The Intellect of a Scientist: When reading and understanding our highly symbolic and philosophical scriptures, we should apply critical thinking and discernment.
- The Love of a Devotee: When thinking of the Almighty, our hearts should be filled with love and devotion.
A Prayer for Devotion
“Oh Lord, grant us the wisdom to remember You in every moment of our lives. May our actions be guided by Your presence, our minds enlightened by Your knowledge, and our hearts filled with Your love. Help us to integrate sensitivity, intellect, and devotion in our journey, so that we may inspire and uplift those around us. Let our lives be a testament to Your glory, as we perform our duties with grace and reverence.”
This story of Narad Muni teaches us that true devotion is about constant remembrance and love for the Lord, even amidst our daily tasks and responsibilities.
