You are currently viewing The Challenge of Ravana to Narada Muni

Introduction

Once, Ravana, the mighty demon king of Lanka, challenged the great sage Narada Muni, demanding the meaning of “Om.” This encounter illustrates important principles about humility, devotion, and the acquisition of spiritual knowledge.

Ravana’s Demand

As Narada Muni was flying, Ravana saw him and called out, “Hey! Come here.” Narada Muni, thinking it best not to cause trouble, complied.

Ravana demanded, “You teach me the meaning of ‘Om,’ right now.”

Narada replied, “No. The meaning of ‘Om’ is not to be taught to people like you. I won’t teach it.”

Ravana insisted, “Why not? I am a disciple, and you are a guru. You must teach me.”

Narada’s Refusal

Narada explained, “This is not for this age, Ravana. Please wait.”

Ravana, showing his arrogance, retorted, “Do you know who I am? I am Trilokeshvara Ravana. Here is my sword!” He brandished his powerful Candrahasa sword, capable of killing anyone and returning to its owner, even through illusions.

Narada, unfazed, said, “You think you can frighten me into teaching you the Vedas? This is not the principle for learning Vedas. What kind of knowledge will you get from me? That knowledge will become useless, so I will not teach you.”

Ravana’s Attack

Ravana, angered, attacked Narada with the Candrahasa sword, which went right through Narada without harming him. Ravana then used his most powerful weapons, but nothing affected Narada, who continued chanting, “Hari! Hari!”

Frustrated, Ravana put aside his weapons, touched Narada’s feet, and asked, “How come you are not killed?”

Narada’s Explanation

Narada explained, “This is a benediction from the Supreme Lord that I have got a spiritual body. You don’t understand this. Once upon a time you also had one, but you lost it because of some mistake. Don’t waste time trying to kill me, because I won’t die.”

Ravana, desiring immortality, asked for the secret.

Narada said, “Very simple, just accept Vishnu as the Supreme Lord. Surrender to Him.”

Ravana, disgusted, dismissed Narada and his advice, exclaiming, “Oh! Aaargh! Again that Vishnu! I don’t want to listen to this name! Get out of my palace, you and your transcendental body. All bogus!”

Narada’s Curse

Narada, realizing Ravana’s arrogance, cursed him, “A monkey will spit on your face, and the tenth day after that you will die, although you are thinking you are so powerful.”

Lessons

  1. Principle of Acquiring Spiritual Knowledge:
    • The Bhagavad-gita (4.34) teaches:
      tad viddhi praṇipātena
      paripraśnena sevayā
      upadekṣyanti te jñānaḿ
      jñāninas tattva-darśinaḥ

Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized souls can impart knowledge unto you because they have seen the truth.

    • Humility and Submission: Knowledge is best imparted when approached with humility and a sincere desire to serve and learn. Arrogance and forceful demands hinder true learning.
  2. Respecting Spiritual Authority:
    • Disrespecting or offending spiritual personalities can lead to severe consequences. Spiritual knowledge and blessings are accessible only through proper respect and humility.
  3. Narada’s Curse as a Benediction:
    • Narada’s curse, which foretold Ravana’s defeat, was actually a blessing in disguise. It led to Ravana’s ultimate encounter with Lord Rama, showcasing the intricate workings of divine will.

Prayer
