Introduction: Durvāsā Muni’s Curse

In the Satya-yuga, the great sage Durvāsā Muni took residence on the bank of a sacred lake called Vimala-Kuṇḍa. Durvāsā, known for his intense austerities and long dreadlocks (jata), would often sit by the lake after his bath, his hair trailing from his head all the way to the entrance of a nearby temple. One day, some mischievous local boys spotted the sage and began to make fun of his extraordinarily long dreadlocks, laughing and mocking him.

Durvāsā Muni, much like Lord Śiva—who is easily pleased but also easily angered—was not one to tolerate such disrespect. The boys’ mockery angered the sage, and in a moment of wrath, he cursed one of the boys to become a crocodile. The young boy, realizing the gravity of his mistake, immediately expressed deep remorse and pleaded with Durvāsā for forgiveness.

The Nature of a Curse and a Compromise

Durvāsā Muni, although moved by the boy’s repentance, was bound by the nature of the curse he had uttered. In the world of Vedic sages, once a curse is pronounced, it cannot be taken back. However, Durvāsā, in his compassion, offered a compromise. He told the boy, “Since you mocked me and acted like a mischievous creature, you shall become a crocodile and crawl on the earth for the duration of four yugas—Satya, Treta, Dvāpara, and Kali.”

But the sage did not leave the boy without hope. He continued, “When the Lord of this forest, Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa, appears in Navadvīpa in Kali-yuga as the son of Śaci, He will deliver you by the power of His Nāma-Sankirtana (congregational chanting of the Holy Names). When He chants the sacred mantra:

Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare
Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare,

you will be freed from my curse and regain your original spiritual form.”

The Boy’s Transformation

The boy was immediately transformed into a crocodile and took residence in a lake in Godruma-dvipa, Navadvīpa, Māyāpura. There, he lived for ages, terrorizing the creatures of the lake and even attacking people who ventured too close to the water’s edge. His reputation as a dangerous and fearsome crocodile spread far and wide.

The Arrival of Caitanya Mahāprabhu

Many yugas later, when the age of Kali arrived, Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, the golden incarnation of Lord Kṛṣṇa, appeared in Māyāpura as Nimāi Paṇḍita. Known for His childhood pastimes and unparalleled scholarship, Nimāi often played with His friends in the holy land of Navadvīpa.

One hot day, as Nimāi and His friends played, they decided to take a bath in the very lake where the cursed crocodile resided. Hearing of their plan, some cowherd men warned them, “Nimāi, don’t go down to that lake! A terrible crocodile lives there, and it’s known to eat humans, especially children. It’s dangerous—please go back home!”

But Nimāi, with a playful smile, confidently said, “Watch this!” He walked down to the lake, wading into the water up to His waist. As He did so, the fearsome crocodile emerged, his massive jaws snapping as he approached Nimāi.

The Power of the Holy Name

Undeterred, Nimāi raised His hands and began to chant the Holy Names:

Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare
Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare.

As soon as the crocodile heard the Holy Names emanating from the lips of Caitanya Mahāprabhu—the Yuga-Avatar, who came to establish the dharma for Kali-yuga—something miraculous happened. The crocodile closed his jaws and slowly swam towards Nimāi, his demeanor transformed. The creature, who had terrorized the lake for millennia, now placed his nose humbly at Nimāi’s lotus feet. In that instant, the curse was lifted, and the crocodile regained his original spiritual form.

In front of all the onlookers, the crocodile transformed into a divine being and ascended to Goloka Vṛndāvana, the eternal abode of Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Conclusion: The Grace of Caitanya Mahāprabhu

This story beautifully illustrates the transformative power of the Holy Names of the Lord. The cursed boy, who had to endure lifetimes as a crocodile due to his offense, was ultimately delivered by the grace of Caitanya Mahāprabhu and the chanting of the Hare Kṛṣṇa Mahā-Mantra. It serves as a reminder that no matter how severe one’s circumstances or past actions, the mercy of the Lord is boundless, and through sincere devotion and the chanting of His Holy Names, liberation and divine grace are always within reach.
