Setting the Scene
While Śrīla Jagannātha dāsa Bābājī Mahārāja was staying in his bhajana-kuṭīra in Kuliyā Navadvīpa, some people who had given up household life and were wearing the cloth of renunciants came to obtain some instructions on bhajana.
The Instruction and Discontent
Considering their qualification, Śrīla Bābājī Mahārāja instructed them to water the eggplant vegetables, which had been planted for Kṛṣṇa’s service. However, having the false ego of being fully matured in bhajana, they were displeased with this instruction and questioned why they should engage in what they considered to be the materialistic work of householders.
The Consultation with Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura
Understanding the mood of their hearts, Śrīla Bābājī Mahārāja brought these disciples before Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, explaining their concerns and requesting his guidance.
Tailored Advice According to Qualification
Some of these persons possessed the false ego of being detached renunciants, some were lethargic and full of anarthas (unwanted habits), and others had hidden illicit desires or independent aspirations. Considering their individual qualifications, Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura gave tailored advice: one was instructed to go on pilgrimage, others to return home and marry, and those who were weak due to ulterior desires were advised to fully surrender to Śrīla Bābājī Mahārāja’s instructions.
Lesson to be Learned:
Spiritual progress requires humility and the recognition that each person’s path is unique, depending on their qualifications and inner state. True service and devotion are not about escaping worldly duties but about performing them with the right consciousness and in accordance with one’s spiritual level. Tailoring spiritual practice to individual qualifications is essential for genuine growth.

O Lord, grant me the humility to accept the guidance suited to my qualifications. Help me recognize my shortcomings and the areas where I need to grow. May I follow the instructions of my spiritual guides with sincerity and devotion, understanding that true service to You may come in different forms according to my spiritual state.
