Once, Srila Jagannath Das Babaji requested his devoted servant, Bihari Das, to read to him from the sacred text, Caitanya-caritamrta. However, Bihari, with a humble heart, responded, “My dear master, you know I am illiterate; I cannot read a word.” Jagannath Das Babaji, displaying his deep spiritual insight and mercy, gently insisted, “No, simply look at the shlokas, and you will easily be able to recite them.”
Trusting his guru’s words, Bihari obediently opened the book and began to gaze at the verses. Miraculously, within a few minutes, Bihari was able to read and recite the verses of the Caitanya-caritamrta. Not only did he read, but he also lovingly narrated the pastimes of Lord Chaitanya with devotion and clarity, something he had never done before.
The Power of the Guru’s Instruction
This incredible incident demonstrates a profound truth often emphasized by Srila Prabhupada: “Along with the instruction of the spiritual master comes the ability to execute it.” Bihari’s newfound ability to read and narrate from the Caitanya-caritamrta was not due to his own literacy, but rather the mystic power and grace bestowed upon him by his pure devotee master, Jagannath Das Babaji.
The Blessings of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu
As the Acharyas have taught, everything is possible for one who has received the mercy of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and His pure devotees. Bihari’s experience is a testament to this timeless principle. Through the blessings of his guru and the grace of Lord Caitanya, Bihari was able to transcend his limitations and glorify the Lord through his narration.
Lesson to Be Learned
This story reminds us of the extraordinary power that accompanies the instructions of a genuine spiritual master. It highlights that when we serve with faith and devotion, the impossible becomes possible. The mercy of the spiritual master and the grace of the Lord can empower us beyond our natural abilities, allowing us to fulfill our spiritual duties and progress on the path of devotion.
Quote from Shastra
The Bhagavad Gita (18.78) states:
“Yatra yogeshvarah krishno yatra partho dhanur-dharah, tatra shrir vijayo bhutir dhruva nitir matir mama.”
“Wherever there is Krishna, the master of mystics, and wherever there is Arjuna, the supreme archer, there will also surely be opulence, victory, extraordinary power, and morality.”
This verse reminds us that where there is devotion to Krishna, even mystic powers can manifest through His grace.
